I wasn’t originally sure about what kind of game A Princess To Save Me was going to be like, but Drunk Dragon Games’ pitch video on Kickstarter for their independent RPG has revealed that the game is a lot more intuitive and unique than I had originally thought.
The game starts off right at the moment where most games end: the hero has saved the princess and the two are out in the woods on their way back to safety. While out hunting the hero is killed and the princess is left to fend for herself. Players pick up the game at this moment. The rest of the details are outlined in the video below.

Originally, I was curious about what sort of direction the game would go in, but the multiple choice, gray-area route seems really intriguing. The idea that the game isn’t just a typical becoming-a-badass tale or following in the role of just having a weak protagonist stationed in a story where everything else exciting happens around the character makes the game that much more interesting. The core concept of the game revolves around the idea of the princess becoming something more (or less) based on the player’s decisions.
However, the duo at Drunk Dragon Games can’t properly finish the game the way they want unless they can hire in an artist or two to flesh out the game’s assets.
Right now what you’re seeing in the game are all stock assets from RPG Maker. According to the Kickstarter page…
The goal for A Princess To Save Me is only $10,000. It just got underway recently and has just under a month to go.
While a lot of the media talks heavily about diversity in gaming, this is the kind of game that actually does something different. It takes an honest trope and puts players in the driver seat to make the decisions. Survival isn’t about getting a shotgun or building a zombie-proof fortification, it’s simply about making it through the night after the knight in shining armor gets offed in the woods.
As mentioned on the Kickstarter page…
It’s not all just narrative design work, though. A Princess To Save Me has turn-based strategic combat, a leveling system and up to four playable characters in a party at a time.
I tend to doubt this will be a game that sees a lot of attention from those who claim to be SJWs since the developers aren’t in the in crowd, but it’s an interesting premise for a game that flips the trope on its head and puts players in charge of what happens next (to a certain degree).
If you think this is something you would like to see get made or if you need to learn more about it, you can do so by visiting the official Kickstarter crowd-funding page.
