Activision has revealed that the Call of Duty franchise was, once again, the best-selling console video game franchise of 2016 based on revenue.
This is the seventh time in the last eight years that the Call of Duty franchise has been the best-selling console franchise worldwide. Activision also confirmed that, as of the latest NPD report, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the best-selling game of 2016 in the U.S. This is the eighth consecutive year a Call of Duty game has earned that title. This was all based on total revenue and units sold from physical and digital sales (excluding hardware bundle sales).
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the latest entry in the franchise, and takes the franchise the farthest its ever been in the future. Though fan reception was extremely negative leading up to launch, the franchise remains strong. 2016 also saw the continued success of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, which received four DLC map packs over the course of the year.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The first DLC map pack, Sabotage, is set to launch January 31 on PS4. Call of Duty 2017, which will be developed by Sledgehammer Games, will likely be announced later this spring.
